Decisions are often an obstacle to happiness.

Why?

Because when you have multiple good options, making a decision is stressful. When your mind is constantly churning on ideas, it takes you out of the present moment, gives you low-level anxiety, and can limit your sleep.

The more primitive parts of your mind may equate the right choice with your survival, activating your fight-or-flight response.

In the modern world, we are bombarded with great options. [continue reading…]

The only reliable way to gain more freedom

More freedom has been a goal of mine for a long time. First, I wanted freedom from my parent’s rules and restrictions. So I went to college.

After college, I wanted the freedom from having to work a day job. So I started a business.

Once that was up and running, I wanted the freedom never to have to work at all.

Now, I mostly seek mental freedom. Freedom from decisions. Freedom from overwhelm. Freedom from my mind constantly desiring more. Freedom from the thoughts that I’m not doing enough or doing the right things.

As an entrepreneur with young kids, that kind of freedom is elusive. There’s always more I could be doing. I could be working out harder. I could be more effective with how I invest my time. I could be having more fun, spending more time with my kids, or giving to charity. The list goes on.

In the process of seeking freedom, I’ve realized that more freedom (no matter what kind) can only be gained in three ways: [continue reading…]

Relaxing in hammock on beach

Creating financial freedom has been my goal ever since being stuck in a 9-5 engineering job. I got a taste of what it meant to be an employee, and I immediately knew it wasn’t for me.

So after three long years, I quit.

That first “real” job lit a fire under my ass and motivated me to work hard and build a business that generated passive income. For me, passive income meant freedom from having a job or having anyone tell me what to do with my time. Passive income meant snowboarding midweek, traveling often, sleeping in when I was tired, and just enjoying life without sluggishly doing the same routine every day.

So I worked hard on my business with one goal in mind – to eliminate the need to work. And after about six years of making very little money, I finally got to the point where I was making more money than I needed for my lifestyle while only having to work a few hours per month.

As you can imagine, this gives me a lot of freedom. I’m not quite to the point of being able to do whatever I want to do, whenever I want to do it, but I’m pretty close.

So the question is, does all of this free time make me a happier person? [continue reading…]

Vitamins and minerals for better sleep

You probably already know that supplementing with magnesium can help you sleep, especially if you’re deficient in magnesium. And, if you’re a little more advanced, you already know that getting enough glycine (one of the amino acids found in bone broth and collagen) can also help you get those Z’s.

But in this article I want to talk about a few lesser known micronutrients that could be the key to unlocking better sleep for you. The body is a complex mechanism by the way, and sometimes it requires going beyond the, for lack of a better word, obvious nutrients that you’ve probably already tried. [continue reading…]

Heal a chronic knee injury

I went from having a chronic knee injury where I couldn’t even walk a mile to being able to do Crossfit again. In this article, I’m going to share the details of how I finally healed my knee.

My injury lasted about two and a half years, and anybody who has had an injury that lasts that long, you know how demoralizing it can be. Just when you think it’s getting better, it gets worse, constantly reminding you that you may never return to the lifestyle you enjoyed pre-injury.

How I Injured My Knee

I’ve always been prone to repetitive stress injuries, dating back to as early as high school basketball when I developed a case of “jumper’s knee.” At my worst I had tendonitis in both wrists, both ankles, and both shoulders.

My knee injury was a similar situation. I had been doing Crossfit for about 4 years consistently and I have always stayed in good shape. But what injured my knee was actually taking a break from Crossfit. [continue reading…]

You hate your job. Your boss is a dick. The office politics are soul destroying. You’re bored, unmotivated, and ready to get out of that hell hole.

Waking up to an alarm clock every single day, rolling out of bed, and heading into the office is slowly draining your will to live.

I’ve been there. I know how it feels. Even though I quit my job over 6 years ago, I still vividly remember feeling like a prisoner at my engineering job. I knew that if I didn’t find a way to escape, I’d keep doing that same kind of work for decades, basically waiting to get old so I could retire.

Fuck that.

So, here’s what I’m going to do in this article.

I’m going to give you the real scoop on how to escape your day job fast (meaning within months), and WITHOUT any of that start an online business kind of bullshit or even taking big risks. Seriously, very little risk. [continue reading…]
